Rahul G. is a freshman at Alpharetta High School and student in the 2018-2019 North Fulton Social Innovators Academy cohort.

Rahul created a project called Pencils for a Purpose. This project is what he calls, a “literacy/education project” and it is the process of collecting school supplies, either used or donated and providing them to underprivileged schools in other countries. He is currently working with a school in India.

Rahul’s passion for this project stems from past experiences visiting his grandmother in India. She worked for a Red Cross school in an unfortunate part of the country, where the entire class shared one pencil. That is what inspired him to start the project two years ago. However, he says his project did not truly begin until Fall 2018 when he joined the Social Innovators Academy. “This is where the entire project came together,” he said.

Pencils for a Purpose is Rahul’s way of ensuring everyone has access to a proper education.

“Without proper education, I wouldn’t be here writing this sentence and the world wouldn’t be what it is today. Education engages people. It causes people’s eyes to light up with joyful realization. Education is the past, the present, and the future.”
