Social Innovators Academy: Strategic Leadership

For our last Social Innovators Academy workshops of 2018, we covered the topic of Strategic Leadership. As our SIA students move forward in planning their social impact projects, they have to begin to reach out and build a team to support their efforts. The Strategic Leadership workshop helps them begin to identify the important elements of teamwork and leadership, and the ways they can utilize these skills to make their projects successful.

Our South Fulton cohort met on Tuesday, December 4th with a small but mighty group. De’Andre, GivingPoint’s Program Manager for all things ITP, kicked off the workshop with a leadership exercise, which included sharing quotes from prominent leaders and having the students identify which quote best matched their leadership style.

Our presenter for the evening was Yoshana Jones Hill, the manager of the Governance & Flexibility Department for Fulton County Schools. Yoshana worked with the students and shared the importance of understanding your “why” in everything that you do, including in leading a team. Next, she had the students participate in a mock Shark Tank event, where they had to work together as a team to pitch a product to the “Sharks,” aka the GivingPoint staff. Thank you Yoshana for teaching our students about leadership in such a fun and engaging way!

Our North Fulton cohort convened on Tuesday, December 11th, and heard from Dr. Steven Palmer, the Head of School at The Cottage School in Roswell. Dr. Palmer also presented at our Summer Social Innovators Academy, hosted at The Cottage School! Students were put into groups and challenged to build the tallest tower, which is always a fun, and thought-provoking, way to test out teamwork. As the leader of The Cottage School, Dr. Palmer had plenty of insight to share with our SIA students. We are lucky to have him!

Leadership and teamwork are essential skills to a having a successful project. As they say, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Thank you again to our amazing presenters, Yoshana Hill Jones and Dr. Steven Palmer, for sharing your time with our students.

Strategic Leadership was our last set of workshops in 2018, but we are already looking forward to all that 2019 will bring! In January we will be celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service by participating in a service project on the 21st, and we will also be hosting our Event Planning and Partnerships workshops.
