It’s hard to believe that October is already over! It seems like just yesterday that we kicked off the school year, and now the first semester is almost finished.

Social Innovators Academy

Our month was dominated by Social Innovators Academy programming, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be running four programs at the moment, two 10-month after school programs, and two in-school programs.

Our after school cohorts focused on Perfecting the Pitch this month, meeting after school during the first two Tuesdays of the month. Thank you again to our presenters, Dr. Isabelle Monlouis and Sharla Calloway, for sharing their time and expertise with our students! You can read a full recap of the workshops here.

We also hosted our first grant writing workshop of the school year, which is open to both our North and South Fulton cohorts to attend. The students learn all the basics about the grant writing process, from preparation to application to follow up. Thank you to Holly York, Director of Development at North Fulton Community Charities, for traveling down to Constellations to share her knowledge with our students!

Social Innovators Academy at Northview High School

This month we kicked off our second in-school program, so we are now at both Milton High School and now Northview High School in Johns Creek. This program, which is currently in its inaugural year, works as a sort of “lunch and learn” program, covering a new Social Innovators Academy topic each week of the semester. To learn more about how the program works, you can read more here. In October, we covered topics ranging from goal-setting to networking to event planning and more.

President’s Volunteer Service Award

While we’ve spent a bunch of time working on Social Innovators Academy, we’ve also had plenty of other students to celebrate this month. GivingPoint is proud to have been able to award 26 local students with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This is a high honor for high school students, and GivingPoint is grateful for the opportunity to be an awarding organization. Check out the full list of students here, and help us celebrate their dedication to service and the Atlanta area!

Introducing De’Andre

GivingPoint has grown again! We are excited to welcome De’Andre Pickett to our team as our second Associate Program Manager. He will be working with schools ITP and in South Fulton. De’Andre helps expand GivingPoint’s potential to reach even more students in the Metro Atlanta area, and we are so happy to have him on the team.

Student Spotlight

Ruhan P. and iCareMission

  • Ruhan is a Social Innovators Academy student who helps run the iCareMission chapter at Northview High School
  • iCareMission helps provide glasses to those in need. They collect used eye glasses and distribute them, either matching someone with a similar prescription, or having new lenses put in.
  • They have chapters in Singapore, India, Australia, and many states within the United States. And they have conducted several eye camps in Mexico, in India: Vishakapatnam, Hyderbad, and in many others places

As we head into November and a month focused on gratitude, we want to say thank you again to everyone whose support makes GivingPoint possible. Here’s to another great month as we start to wrap up 2018!
