Happy November from GivingPoint!
It feels as though this school year is flying by! It is almost December and almost time to wrap up 2018. November was a great month for our students and our programs, and we also spent some giving thanks for all the people who make GivingPoint possible.
Social Innovators Academy
Social Innovators Academy had a great month, focused on Networking. This is one of our favorite workshops, because not only do the students learn a lot, but they also get to immediately practice their new skills. You can read a full review of both workshops here.
The South Fulton cohort met on Tuesday, November 6th, to hear from Dr. Rubina Malik, a GivingPoint superstar who has presented numerous times. Dr. Malik is a strategist and a professor, and brought along a group of her Morehouse students, to give our SIA students some hands-on networking experience.
Our North Fulton cohort met the following Tuesday, November 13th, to learn about networking from Holly York, Director of Development for North Fulton Community Charities. Holly also recently shared her expertise at our fall grant-writing workshop. Thank you to both our awesome presenters for sharing their time and talent!
Our Social Innovators Academy students met on Saturday, November 10th, to participate in a service day. Both our South and North Fulton cohorts came together to volunteer at the Foster Care Support Foundation. It was an impactful morning, for our students and for the families at the Foster Care Support Foundation. It is also helpful for SIA students to see a nonprofit and project in action, as it can help inspire them as they plan for social impact projects of their own.
Fulton County Schools Student Leadership Summit
GivingPoint had the opportunity to present at the Fulton County School Student Leadership Summit, which brings together student members of Student Government Associations from all over Fulton County Schools. Nyaboke worked with the group and lead them towards putting passion into action!
Our in-school Social Innovators Academy programming has being going well this semester, and now our program at Milton High School has actually come to a close for the semester. However, we will be back next semester, and our programming at Northview High School will continue on until mid-January. We have had some amazing presenters over the past few months and want to thank them for sharing their time.
GivingPoint Gives Thanks
We spent some time in November reflecting on all the groups of people who make GivingPoint possible: parents, presenters, locations, board of directors, and of course, students! If you were following along on social media you may have seen these posts tagged #GivingPointGivesBack
Aaliyah R., A Touch of Warmth
This is where it all started 11 years ago ❤️ I knew the moment I handed out my first blanket that my purpose in life was…
- Aaliyah is a current Social Innovators Academy student
- She formed A Touch of Warmth when she was four years old and was sad that there were children in the world who didn’t have a blanket like she did.
- That first year, she gathered 160 blankets and donated them on Thanksgiving Day
- 11 years later, she is still spreading a little warmth on Thanksgiving with Cobb Street Ministries!
Here’s to a great final month of 2018!
