GivingPoint didn’t let a little snow stop us from kicking off 2018 with a bang!
January was filled with plenty of learning and service opportunities for our students.
On January 15th we celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering with Hands on Atlanta and Trees Atlanta. We had a large group of youth and adults, from GivingPoint and beyond, gather on a frigid morning to help beautify and plant trees at both South View Cemetery and Chestnut Hill Cemetery. A little frozen ground didn’t stop us from digging, planting, mulching, and watering!
Our scheduled GivingPoint Institute workshop had to be rescheduled due to a mid-month snow and ice storm. Local schools were out for a few days, but that didn’t keep our students from planning and preparing for the rest of the month.
GPI Spotlight: START
On January 22nd, our GivingPoint Institute students Anup B. and Zander K. launched their GPI project, START, Science To Action Road Trips.
Working with approximately 75 students from W. J. Scott Elementary, Anup and Zander, along with six fellow Westminster students, taught the concept of force and motion to 4th graders. After the classroom lessons, the group took a field trip to Sky Zone in Kennesaw to actually experience the science they had just learned about. The goal of the project is to help students learn to love math and science through participation in real life experiences in the community and to ultimately improve their performance in those areas.
GivingPoint Institute: Event Planning
We wrapped up our month with our GivingPoint Institute workshop about Event Planning on January 25th. Our featured presenter was Rachel Sprecher, the Executive Director of the Office of Partnerships and Development at Atlanta Public Schools. Rachel focused on the ins and outs of running a successful event and the students practiced the planning process on hypothetical events.
Thank you to our founder Derek V. Smith for coming by our workshop!
