April was both a time to wrap up and reflect on this past school year, while also gearing up and getting excited for all the things coming up still in 2018.

GivingPoint Institute: Life After GPI

We hosted our last GPI workshop on Tuesday 4/6, and it was about “Life After GivingPoint Institute;” focusing on how the students could continue their projects and grow their passions even after they finish our program.

James, GivingPoint’s Director of Programs, lead the students in a period of reflection and had them think about everything they have learned over the last nine months. We then had presenters John Herbert and Danny Denton from Herbert Legal Group, who taught our students the next steps it would take to turn their passion projects into actual 501(c)(3) organizations so they could continue their work as a nonprofit. Additionally, we had former GivingPoint-er Nuri at the workshop so that she could share the ways she has utilized what GPI has taught her.

Support from Gas South

At this workshop, we also had the honor watching one of our GPI students, Hannah J., be awarded $1,000 from Gas South towards her project. Her project, titled #BecauseIAmAGirl, aims to encourage and support refugee girls at Idlewood Elementary in Clarkston through tutoring and mentorship opportunities. We are so grateful for Gas South and all of our amazing partners who support the work of our students.

Fulton County Schools Governance Students

On Saturday, April 14th, GivingPoint had the opportunity to present at the Fulton County School Governance Student Leadership Conference. This event is for those in student council programs in Fulton County high schools, and we got to lead them in a visioning activity and help set them up with resources to go back to their schools and start planning projects that they are passionate about. Thank you Fulton County Schools for allowing us to be a part of your day!

It’s hard to believe that another school year is about to wrap up, but we are excited to see our GivingPoint students go off and do exciting things. We are also looking forward to the new programming and students we will meet this summer!

Upcoming for GivingPoint

  • Up first for GivingPoint, however, is moving into our new office space! We are very excited to be tenants at the soon-to-be-open Constellations Community. This unique coworking space, located downtown, is focused on nonprofits and social good individuals and organizations. We are grateful to be a part of this new movement. Come visit us in our new offices starting next week!
  • Additionally, next week we will be hosting our annual Sparks Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 7th! This event is our opportunity to recognize the things that our students have accomplished throughout this past year, and also to look forward to all the things they have ahead of them. If you are interested in attending and have not yet received your e-invite, please respond and let us know.

  • As we wrap up this year’s GPI students, we are also already looking forward towards our upcoming programs and students. Our three Summer Social Innovators Academies will be running during the month of June: 6/11-15 at Georgia State University, 6/18-6/22 at The Cottage School in Roswell, and 6/25-29 at Gwinnett Technical College. While the seats are full for students, we ARE still looking for presenters for these programs! If you or someone you know would be a great presenter for any of our workshops, please visit bit.ly/presentSIA today!
  • And we are still actively recruiting for our 10-month school year programming! Students will meet once a month to learn about topics such as social entrepreneurship, project management, networking, budgeting, and more. We will be hosting regional locations: downtown at Georgia State University, in Gwinnett at Gwinnett Tech, and in North Fulton. If you know a student who would be a great fit for our program, have them apply online today at bit.ly/applySIA18. Applications close June 1st.
